Abstract
Purpose: We evaluated the first experience of out effect of the extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), with EDAP-Sonolith Praktis. And we analyzed the therapeutic results of 410 cases of urinary calculi treated using an above mentioned lithotriptor.

Materials and Methods: A total number of 410 cases, 15 to 87 years old, were underwent ESWL using EDAPSonolith Praktis between February 2000 and December 2003. The site and size of stones, session, auxiliary procedure, success rate, and causes of failure, complications, efficiency quotient (EQ) and retreatment were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed.

Results: Of the 410 cases, there were 140 (34.1%) and 270 (65.9%) cases of renal stones and ureteral stones, respectively. The mean number of sessions was 2.2. The overall success rate was 85.4%. The success rates were 88.6, 81.7, 63.2% according to sizes of stone <10 mm, 10-20 mm, 20 mm<, respectively. And there were close correlations between the success rate and the size (p<0.05). The complications were pain, gross hematuria, nausea, vomiting, steinstrasse. The most common complication was pain (15.6%). The auxiliary procedures were done in 117 cases. Efficiency quotient was 0.45.

Conclusions: The EDAP Sonolith-Praktis is an also effective and safe lithotriptor to treat the urinary stones of various site and size, compared to the others. But, the use of EDAP Sonolith-Praktis in the staghorn stone is ineffective. Future investigation about the lithotripter will be performed in our hospital thereafter.
